How many Swiss francs is 1 EUR?

1 EUR = 0.9236 CHF

Interbank mid rate, a reference; any real exchange has a two-sided (buy/sell) price. With us, the conversion for a metals purchase runs at interbank wholesale rates: the two-sided spread is typically a few hundredths to tenths of a percent, not 1-2 percent.

EUR/CHF and gold

Many people hold the Swiss franc and gold for the same reason: both count as safe havens in a crisis. In stressed markets they therefore often strengthen together, with EUR/CHF typically falling while the euro price of gold rises. For a Hungarian investor the forint gold price depends on the dollar price per ounce and on the forint exchange rate, and the franc plays only an indirect part. This is not a guarantee and not investment advice.

What moves the Euro-franc rate?

Rate differential: ECB versus SNB

A main driver is the gap between the two central banks’ expected rate paths. When the market prices a higher yield on the euro than on the franc, capital flows into the euro and EUR/CHF rises; when the franc’s rate outlook moves ahead, the pair falls. Swiss interest rates have traditionally been low, so the franc is often used as a funding currency too.

The franc as a safe haven

In a crisis, in war or in a stock market panic, investors run to the Swiss franc: it strengthens and EUR/CHF falls. In calmer periods the demand for safety eases and the pair usually drifts back up.

Moves by the SNB

The Swiss National Bank has acted against an overly strong franc several times, by buying currency, cutting rates and, from 2011 to 2015, holding a floor against the euro. It dropped that floor without warning in January 2015 and the pair collapsed within minutes. An SNB announcement can still move EUR/CHF today.

Euro area growth and inflation

Weak growth or inflation data from the euro area weigh on the euro against the franc, strong numbers support it. Much of Swiss foreign trade is with the euro area, so the economy there carries over to the franc as well.
