By market convention the unit is the troy ounce (XAU); the cross is computed synthetically from the two dollar quotes: BTC/USD ÷ XAU/USD.

The two assets behind this ratio

Bitcoin vs gold: why measure bitcoin in gold?

Both have a finite supply

Bitcoin is often called digital gold: its supply is mathematically capped (21 million), gold’s is physically limited (mining is slow and costly). Neither can be diluted by a central-bank decision.

Sovereign store of value

Bitcoin and ethereum are the two most decentralised crypto assets, and both can be self-custodied: “your keys, your crypto”, with the key in your hands there is no intermediary in between. Gold offers the same in physical form: ownable without an intermediary (with us: allocated, insured vault, delivery anytime). This absence of an intermediary is the main shared trait.

Where they differ: volatility

Bitcoin has historically been far more volatile than gold; gold has centuries of data, bitcoin barely more than a decade. Not investment advice, just a fact.

Where they differ: type of risk

With gold the questions are storage and authenticity (with us: LBMA supplier chain, insured vault); with bitcoin, key loss, exchange failure or regulation. Different risks, not comparable on one scale.

Ethereum in gold

After bitcoin, ethereum is the most decentralised large crypto asset and is equally self-custodiable. Its role differs though: besides being a store of value it is a programmable platform, so its gold ratio also reacts to technology cycles, typically with wider swings than bitcoin’s.

Moving crypto gains into gold?

After strong phases of the crypto cycle many investors rotate part of the gains into physical gold: similar hard-money logic, far lower volatility, insured vaulted storage and buy-back anytime. Not investment advice; the decision is yours.
